How long does an electronic check take to clear?

I thought it cleared right away but at walmart I have noticed it takes 2 days to clear. How long does an electronic check take to clear?
There are three things that need to happen for an electronic check, or any debit for that matter, to ';clear'; your account.

The first happens when the merchant ';settles'; their batch of transactions. Some large merchants settle several times per day. Others once per day. When the merchant settles, he sends your account information, the debit type, amount, and date to their financial institution.

Next the financial instituion must settle with an Automated Clearing House (ACH) by sending much the same information. There are only two ACH operators: the Federal Reserve Bank ACH (FedACH), and Electronic Payment Network (EPN). They both settle four times per day when they process the debit or credit.

This is when your bank receives the debit. Some banks process the debit and reflect the activity pretty quickly, others may take several hours to a day before you see it post to your account.

Credits to your account generally take longer because the banks like to keep your money longer, even for a day, for the interest they earn on your money. How long does an electronic check take to clear?
When I write a check at Walmart it usually takes 2 days or so to clear as well. I would say once the merchant receives the check in hand, count on 2-3 days. If you pay via elec. check online, it usually takes about 2 days as well.
2-3 days usually, but it really depends on the banks involved
Walmart takes between two and three days to clear an electronic check.
