How do i clear a check engine light on a 01 impala after i have changed the egr valve?

you have to use a scanner to clear the code off or it will come right back,removing the battery cables only worked on the older system the newer ones require a scanner to completely erase a trouble code from the computer,good luck.How do i clear a check engine light on a 01 impala after i have changed the egr valve?
