When you pay with a check, how long should it take to clear the bank?

I paid to get my car fixed at a locally-owned body shop on March 16th. Shouldn't they have deposited it by now, and shouldn't it have cleared the bank? How long do they get to deposit a check before the money re-credited to me? It hasn't shown up on my online statement. I have BB%26amp;T. Thanks! When you pay with a check, how long should it take to clear the bank?
In most cases banks follow the Uniform Commercial Code (UCC). But the UCC can differ slightly from state to state. Generally you'll find that a bank need not pay a ';stale dated'; check. That means a check that was written more than six months ago.

Because most checks are processed by machines which do not read the dates, most banks also tell their customers that while they are not required to pay stale dated items, they reserve the right to do so. If you do not want an item paid, a stop payment request is the best way to accomplish this. If you have a check that is over six months old, you may want to ask the issuer's bank if they'll still pay it and let the issuer know what they said. They may have believed it was lost by then and added it back in their balance or be sending you a new check.

If you issued a check that wasn't cashed, you could issue a replacement assuming the other was lost. You could also tell the Payee that you'll first have to place a stop payment order on the first check. You may or may not want them to pay any fee you incur for that. When you pay with a check, how long should it take to clear the bank?
I think they have about 90 days to cash it, not sure. Some places have a bookkeeper come in once a month who does things like all the bank deposits, instead of someone going to the bank once a day. Normally it takes about 3 days max for a local check to clear, in my experience.
That's the problem with paper checks, but a lot of places won't accept online transfers. Figure it money spent, and deduct it from your checkbook regardless.
If it bothers you check with the body shop and see if they cashed it. If they have then it should take around 3 days to clear.
Usually it's 5 business days after deposit. Maybe they have not deposit it yet?? You do have enough money in your account, right?
