How can i stop a business owner from telling people that I wrote a check that did not clear?

You can sue him for defamation. If it's true, though, you'll lose. How can i stop a business owner from telling people that I wrote a check that did not clear?
If the business owner hasn't received his/her money then you can't. Make the check good and then you might have a case if they keep smearinig you .

I knew a business owner in Florida that use to take out and add in the local paper warning others not to take checks from folks that had stiffed him. The owner of the bad check usualy came in to make it good.. I knew another one that use to tape bad checks to the inside of the window faceing the street.

Both had a good plan because it was cheaper than taking the bad check writer to small claims court and they got their money a lot quicker. How can i stop a business owner from telling people that I wrote a check that did not clear?
i am not sure why a business owner would tell people, and how he would go about doing that. if the owner tells employees not to accept any more personal checks from you, that is likely acceptable. if someone writes a bad check to pay for their rent, the landlord has a policy of not accepting personal checks from that person in the future.

if the business owner is telling the general public about a bounced check, that is strange and not right. if that is the case, or if he is threatening to, contact the Better Business Bureau and report this person. find out from them if there's any further action you can take.

spread the word to folks NOT to buy from that store. write an editorial to the local paper about this business owner. maybe your paper will publish an anonymous editorial. gather evidence and take the guy to small claims court.

you might want to get a consulation from a lawyer who does civil matters. a lot of lawyers/legal services will give a free consultation. see what your options are. good luck.
If it is true, then he can tell anyone he wants. If not, it is slander and you can sue him for damages to your reputation.
