I just sold a car for $2000 and since I don't have a bank account I'll have to sign it over to a friend so they can cash it. How long should it take before I can safely use the money? This is from a Suntrust bank in Virginia, USA.How long does it take for a check to clear the bank?

Since you specified Virginia, USA, you may be out of the country. If so, it would probably take a minimum of two weeks. If you are in the same city as the bank, it could clear overnight. If you could go to a suntrust bank, they would cash it on the spot, but since you don't have an account with them, they would charge you a fee. Be sure it is cleared before you spend the money, or it could come back on them, and that would be bad for your friendship.
