How long does it take for a check written to clear to my bank on average?

I had a direct deposit mishap with the company i work for, so now the money i was supposed to have in my account friday is now not going to be available until tuesday morning. So now I'm in a predicament! I don't know what to do!How long does it take for a check written to clear to my bank on average?
It depends on when the person deposits the check and what bank they use. If they use the same bank as you, the check should clear on the same day. If they use a different bank, it could take 2-3 business days. How long does it take for a check written to clear to my bank on average?
Do not take this for granted. Find some other money to put in the account if you have any other options. The banking industry has recently sped the process up dramatically. There is no longer a safe way to ';float';.

The money is now possible to be transferred as fast as on the same day of receipt of the check. Not trying to scare you, just hoping you don't take false comfort in an imagined float that no longer is to be depended upon.

This is exactly why I *don't* have direct deposit - it all leads to the account holder ';needing'; to pay for overdraft ';protection'; just in case of stuff like this. I think it's all a way for the banking industry and employers to herd everyone into the same pen just so there's less paperwork for them to do. Frankly, I don't see the ';convenience'; of direct deposit - how do you know exactly how much was deposited until you receive your check stub? Don't some banks still charge for balance inquiries?

Sorry about your predicament, but what I'd advise is that you not record the deposit 'til you can confirm *with your bank* that it was actually made. But I'm going to guess it takes 3-5 business days for a check to clear - the farther away it went in the mail, the longer it takes to get back to your bank. And if you take this up with HR, I have to think your company should be *perfectly* willing to cover any overdraft fees you may incur in the meantime. It's their fault - they should cover the costs of it. (That's not saying they *will,* though.)
like a week
All banks are beginning to use a new system where the checks are cashed that business day, Kind of debited out of the check writers account. If you still have one of the checking accounts that sends the cancelled checks back to you,,,,,,,,you will have noticed some of them are just copies of the checks, those are the ones that are ACH'd directly from the writers account,,,,,,so dont count on amy grace period anymore,,,,not in these days of high speed everything LOL
